Week 8

Updated: Mar 13, 2020

Hola readers,

We’ve just finished our fifth week of Spanish, with only one more to go. Time is really flying by, as we only have 5 weeks left in the beautiful country of Guatemala! I’m going to miss my host family so much when we have to say goodbye to them, but I’ll just try not to think about that quite yet...

This past week was pretty chill, we had Spanish classes each morning and different activities in the afternoons depending on the day. On Tuesday afternoons when we are staying in San Juan our group splits into our different groups for service work. Noah and I’s group goes with a man named Hilmar to his site where they are building a trades school. This week we helped carry planks and dig and fill in trenches for their pipe system. It was hot, but that didn’t stop us from having smiles on our faces and enjoying our work!

This past week flew by and now we are at Denny’s Beach Resort on Lago de Izabal enjoying the weather and listening to different “knowing yourself” sessions led by our own fearless leaders.

Something that has resonated with me over the past few days is a passage from Matthew 20:1-16 (the parable of the workers in the vineyard). This parable that Jesus told is about a land owner who goes out and hires men promising each of them they will receive a denarius in pay at the end of the day. He hired men all throughout the day, and no matter how long they worked for, they each received the denarius that they were promised. As you would expect, the men hired in the morning grumbled about being payed the same as those in the afternoon because they didn’t think it was “fair” to be paid the same amount for the work they’d done. The owner of the vineyard’s last words in the parable to the grumbling workers are, “Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?” For me I see this story as God giving us all the same amount of grace no matter what we’ve done or haven’t done because he simply loved us despite our good or bad works. This is so beautiful because it takes away the fear that we aren’t good enough for God to love and that we have to earn grace. We are each loved for who we are and there’s nothing we ever do to change that!

That’s all for today,

Kiera & Noah
